Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

What is Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)?

ICSI is a method used in the treatment of male infertility. Patients with low sperm count, reduced sperm motility, or abnormal sperm structure can become fathers through the ICSI method.

In IVF treatments, two different methods are used: the traditional IVF method and the ICSI method. Both methods follow the same treatment stages, with the only difference being the fertilization stage.

In traditional IVF, egg and sperm cells are placed in the same environment, and fertilization is expected to occur naturally. In ICSI, however, the best sperm cell is selected and directly injected into the egg, thus increasing the chances of fertilization.

Who is ICSI Suitable For?

  • Patients with very low sperm count or azoospermia
  • Those with abnormal sperm morphology
  • Couples who previously tried traditional IVF but were unsuccessful
  • Patients undergoing preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)
  • Couples with unexplained infertility issues

What are the Advantages of the ICSI Technique?

Compared to traditional IVF, ICSI has a significantly higher chance of achieving fertilization. For patients with low sperm count and quality, achieving pregnancy through traditional IVF can be difficult, while ICSI offers the opportunity for a healthy pregnancy.
