Insemination (IUI)

Insemination (IUI)

What is the Insemination Method?

Insemination (IUI) is an assisted reproductive technique applied when pregnancy does not occur despite regular sexual intercourse for a year. It is a simple and quick method that requires sperm production in males and egg production in females.

How is the Insemination Procedure Applied?

Before applying the insemination treatment, it is essential to identify the reproductive issues of the couple. The prospective mother is examined by a gynecologist, while the prospective father is examined by a urologist. If insemination treatment is deemed appropriate, the mother-to-be will see her doctor on the 3rd day of her menstrual cycle. During this examination, the condition of the ovaries is checked, and if necessary, hormone medications are used to stimulate ovarian growth. Hormonal pills or injections prescribed by the doctor are taken for 5 to 7 days. After this period, a vaginal examination is performed again to check the number and size of the eggs. If they are at a suitable stage for fertilization, a trigger injection is administered subcutaneously, and the insemination procedure follows. The sperm obtained from the father is analyzed in a laboratory. The highest quality sperm with the greatest potential for achieving pregnancy is selected and transferred into the uterus with the help of a catheter.

Who Can Insemination Be Applied To?

Insemination can be applied if the prospective father has sperm that can be processed, and the prospective mother has no issues with egg development. If the woman has ovulation dysfunction problems, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, or if the man has a slight decrease in sperm motility and count, insemination treatment can be considered. Additionally, insemination is also used in the treatment of patients who present for reasons such as unexplained infertility or vaginismus.

What Should Be Considered Before the Insemination Procedure?

There are specific points that both the woman and the man must follow before the insemination procedure.

Things for the Man to Consider:
To ensure the sperm is effective, he should avoid smoking, alcohol, drugs, or medications within the last 48 hours. It has been found that these substances adversely affect the structure and motility of the sperm.

Things for the Woman to Consider:
The woman receiving insemination should not have any vaginal infections during treatment and should not use any vaginal medications, creams, or lotions.

Is Bed Rest Required After the Insemination Procedure?

The insemination procedure is a painless method that lasts a few minutes. It is performed without the need for general anesthesia while the patient lies in a gynecological examination position. After insemination, the person can rest for 15-20 minutes and then comfortably continue their daily activities. Complaints after the procedure are minimal, but if any negative symptoms are noticed, the doctor should be contacted immediately.
