Fungal Infection (Candidiasis)

What is Vaginal Fungal Infection?

It is a type of infection caused by Candida albicans. It can occur in the vagina, mouth, and moist areas of the body. There are normally a certain number of bacteria in the vaginal flora. However, in some cases, this balance is disrupted, allowing fungi to multiply and cause infection.

Conditions that can disrupt this hormonal balance include antibiotic use, menopause, pregnancy, periods of oral contraceptive use, diabetes with uncontrolled blood sugar, medication therapies that suppress the intestinal system, and conditions like AIDS. Vaginal fungal infections are generally considered to be sexually transmitted.

What are the Symptoms of Vaginal Fungal Infection?

  • Itching in the genital area
  • Thick, white discharge resembling cottage cheese
  • Redness on the outer side of the vagina
  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Some women may show no symptoms.
  • In men, it causes swelling and redness on the penis, more frequently seen in uncircumcised individuals.

How is Vaginal Fungal Infection Treated?

Treatment for vaginal fungal infections can involve oral tablets, creams, or suppositories. In chronic cases, the underlying condition that may be impairing the immune system should be investigated. Recovery from the infection may take a few days to a week.

What Should I Do Against Fungal Infection?

  • Avoid sexual intercourse until the infection clears.
  • Take your medications regularly.
  • Avoid sugary foods.
  • Do not use special shampoos, sprays, etc., for this area unless prescribed by your doctor.
  • Keep the genital area dry.
  • Wear cotton underwear and change it frequently.
  • If you are overweight, consider losing weight.
  • If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar.
  • Consult your doctor if the infection recurs within two months or does not improve despite treatment.

How Can I Prevent Fungal Infections?

  • Keep moist areas of the skin dry and cool.
  • Do not wear wet bathrobes or swimsuits for long periods.
  • Avoid wearing nylon-like underwear.
  • Avoid frequent and prolonged use of antibiotics if possible.
