I Can’t Get Pregnant, What Should I Do?

You may have many questions in your mind, such as why we don’t have a child, what should I do to get pregnant, and whether I should start treatment to conceive. To have a child, you should first identify the cause of your infertility problem.

Why Can’t I Get Pregnant, Am I Infertile?

Many couples who are trying to conceive but haven’t succeeded after having unprotected intercourse often find themselves asking, "Am I infertile?" When evaluating infertility, two key factors are considered: the woman's age and the duration of unprotected intercourse.
If the Woman is

Under 35

Couples who have been trying to conceive for one year without success are usually recommended to explore IVF treatment.

If the Woman is

Over 35

If pregnancy hasn’t occurred after 6 months of unprotected, regular intercourse, IVF treatment is recommended.

If pregnancy doesn’t occur after the suggested time, it’s important to consult a specialist. In some cases, the inability to conceive may be due to male or female factors, and sometimes the cause remains unexplained.

What Should I Do to Get Pregnant?

Couples wishing to have a child are advised to have unprotected intercourse at least twice a week. Particularly having intercourse during the ovulation period significantly increases your chances of getting pregnant. If you have regular menstrual cycles, the most fertile period for conception is between the 10th and 16th days of your cycle, starting from the first day of your period.

Couples wishing to have a baby should also pay attention to their nutrition and lifestyle. Smoking and/or alcohol use should be stopped, and a diet rich in protein should be maintained. Avoiding anxiety-provoking thoughts like “We should have a child” or “It won’t happen again” and reducing stress with simple exercises like walking also positively affects pregnancy success.

I Can’t Get Pregnant, Should I See a Doctor?

Knowing the timing of ovulation and tracking your menstrual cycle is crucial for achieving pregnancy. If intercourse during the ovulation period has not resulted in pregnancy, you should see a doctor without delay. It is important to identify and treat any conditions that could prevent pregnancy, such as thyroid disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome, diabetes, or endometriosis.

During the period when pregnancy does not occur, avoid relying on rumors or over-the-counter medications without a doctor’s supervision.

Your doctor will determine the cause of the infertility through examination and necessary tests and will start the most appropriate treatment for you.

What Should I Consider When Choosing an IVF Center?

IVF treatment is a team effort. A successful IVF center should have a team of expert doctors, nurses, patient counselors, embryologists, and technicians who continuously enhance their scientific knowledge through academic research.

The second most important factor is the strength of the embryology laboratory. A successful laboratory is equipped with the latest technological infrastructure and can produce and select the highest quality embryos from the collected eggs and sperm. With this awareness, at Bahçeci, we allocate a significant portion of our investments to the technological equipment of our embryology laboratory and stay updated with all innovations in this field.

Our laboratories underwent a long-term inspection process by ESHRE in 2022. Our institution was examined in detail in areas such as infrastructure, personnel expertise, technology, and training. As a result of the inspections, the quality of the materials and technologies used, the personnel performing the procedures, and the services provided were certified. We are the only institution in Turkey with ESHRE Certification and one of only 8 IVF centers in the world to achieve this.

When choosing a center, another criterion to consider is the “rate of bringing healthy babies home.” Some centers may have good pregnancy rates but relatively low rates of delivering healthy babies. Healthy birth rates should be evaluated rather than just pregnancy rates.

Here are the points to consider when choosing an IVF center:

Proven Expertise in the Field
Laboratory with the Latest Technological Equipment
Healthy Birth Rates

Is It Possible to Get Pregnant Without Starting IVF Treatment?

Many couples have achieved pregnancy without starting IVF treatment in our clinics. We analyze our patients in detail before starting treatment. The first rule for successful IVF treatment is to accurately identify the cause of infertility.
There may be various underlying reasons why a couple cannot conceive naturally. Therefore, making an accurate diagnosis is crucial for deciding on the appropriate treatment.
For example, if there are intrauterine cystic findings such as fibroids or polyps that prevent the woman from becoming pregnant, treatments targeting these issues can lead to pregnancy without the need for IVF.
Our goal is to help our patients have children without financial or emotional strain if their medical history allows.
To achieve pregnancy without starting IVF treatment, we apply different monitoring methods for prospective parents:
1

Monitoring for the Woman

If necessary, the development of the eggs is monitored either with or without medication. The couple increases their chances of pregnancy by having intercourse on the days specified by this monitoring. If hormonal factors such as diabetes or thyroid issues are present, treatments and lifestyle changes can lead to pregnancy without starting IVF.
2

Medication for the Man

Medications and vitamins help increase sperm count or motility. Lifestyle changes may also be requested from the male partner. Dietary adjustments may be expected to achieve a healthy weight.

In many cases, we have achieved pregnancy with quality sperm obtained through medication without needing Micro-TESE procedures.
3

Insemination Treatment

If pregnancy does not occur despite treating existing problems, insemination treatment may be considered. Insemination is a simple and quick method that requires sperm production in the male and egg production in the female.

If insemination treatment is deemed appropriate, the woman will have a check-up on the 3rd day of her cycle. During this examination, the condition of the ovaries is checked, and if necessary, hormone medications are used to stimulate the ovaries. Once the eggs reach the desired maturity, a trigger injection is administered. The highest quality sperm with the greatest chance of achieving pregnancy is selected and transferred into the uterus using a catheter.
