What is the Alice Test?

The Alice test is an extremely important test that increases the success rate of IVF treatment. The Alice test, which has started to be used in the world’s few IVF centers, has also started to be applied simultaneously in Bahçeci clinics. Especially in cases where there is a problem with the embryo attaching to the uterus and in cases of recurrent miscarriages, the success of pregnancy increases if the Alice test is applied.

How Does the Alice Test Affect IVF Success?

The Alice test offers the opportunity to examine the uterine tissue in great detail. In order for IVF treatment to result in pregnancy, a healthy uterine environment is as important as a healthy embryo. The uterus must have a structure that will accept the embryo and allow for its healthy development. Until recently, the inside of the uterus was thought to be a completely sterile environment, completely free of microbes. However, studies have shown that there are many microbes in the uterine environment. The Alice test allows us to reveal the rate of harmful microbes in the uterus. Approximately 25% of patients who have unsuccessful IVF attempts have chronic endometritis. Chronic endometritis means inflammation of the inner lining of the uterus. The Alice test can detect inflammation in the uterus. Then, antibiotic and probiotic treatment is applied for this problem. The antibiotic treatment to be applied should be planned specifically for the person. Not just any antibiotic treatment, but a treatment specific to the person’s condition is applied. After this treatment, the uterus is now ready to accept the embryo and the success of the embryo’s attachment increases significantly.

What is Chronic Endometritis?

Chronic endometritis is a recurring inflammation of the endometrium (the lining of the uterus), usually caused by bacterial infection. 30% of infertile women have this condition. However, the incidence of chronic endometritis reaches up to 60% in women who have had repeated IVF failures and recurrent miscarriages. This disease does not cause symptoms and cannot be detected by standard ultrasound examinations. Therefore, it is often not noticed and treated. The disease was usually diagnosed by histology, hysteroscopy and/or microbial culture. However, these three methods can produce false results in 80% of cases. It is now possible to get the most accurate result with the ALICE test.

How is the ALICE Test Applied?

It is performed with a uterine biopsy between the 15th and 25th days of the menstrual period. The piece taken from the uterus is examined and it is determined whether there are harmful microbes. A detailed analysis of the environment in the uterus is performed on the day of the biopsy in the DNA molecules and is compared with the microbial distribution that should be in a healthy uterus. If this comparison is found to be risky for the uterus in terms of this distribution, additional treatment is started.

What Information Does the Alice Test Provide?

  • It provides information about the presence and quantity of bacteria that cause chronic endometritis in the uterus.
  • Provides information about genital pathogens that develop in connection with sexually transmitted diseases.
  • If a pathogen is found, it gives an idea about the antibiotic treatment to be applied. The treatment to be applied should be done by a specialist physician and should be planned specifically for the person.

I am taking medication. Will this affect the Alice Test?

Yes, especially antibiotic use affects the test results. Therefore, the patient should not take antibiotics for 1 month before the test. If the patient has taken antibiotics during this time period, they should share information such as the dose of the antibiotic, the name of the active ingredient, the method of use and the duration of use with their doctor.
