Trichomonas infection is a sexually transmitted disease that occurs in both women and men. It is a treatable infection that does not cause damage to the vagina or penis. The causative agent of this disease is an organism called Trichomonas vaginalis.
Symptoms of trichomonas include frothy, foul-smelling discharge, itching, and burning during urination in women. Most men do not experience any symptoms, but sometimes there may be irritation at the tip of the penis.
Your doctor will examine you to determine the problem. A sample of the discharge will be examined under a microscope to identify the organism. Tests for other sexually transmitted diseases may be requested from both you and your partner. It is generally treated with an oral medication called Metronidazole. This medication should not be used during the first three months of pregnancy. Your partner should also be treated.
Condoms are the only means of protection. It is important to be monogamous or to have sexual relations with a limited number of partners. If you have contracted trichomonas infection, you should avoid sexual intercourse and see a doctor as soon as possible.
