The Pap smear test is a test used to detect abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix (the neck of the uterus). These changes in cells are called dysplasia. If dysplasia is diagnosed and not treated, it can progress to cancer.
The Pap smear test also diagnoses other infections such as viral infections like condyloma and herpes, as well as fungal infections like candida or trichomonas. Additionally, it provides information about your hormones (particularly concerning progesterone and estrogen).
Women, especially those who are sexually active, should have a Pap smear test done once a year. If all smear test results are normal until the age of 65, there is no need to repeat the test.
To avoid misleading results, you should not wash the vagina, use vaginal creams, or engage in sexual intercourse for up to two days before the test.
The Pap smear test is a quick procedure that lasts only a few seconds. During a gynecological examination, a speculum is inserted into the vagina. A sample is taken from the cervix using a brush or cotton swab and sent to a pathology laboratory for examination.
The time it takes to get smear test results may vary depending on the institution where you had the test done, but it usually takes 2-3 days.
If an infection is detected, it will be treated. If abnormal cells are found in the test results, further tests and treatments will be conducted. The Pap smear test is considered 100% reliable.
One of the common questions people have after a smear test is whether they can engage in sexual intercourse. There is no problem with having intercourse after the smear test.
The Pap smear test diagnoses precancerous conditions. If detected, cancer development can be prevented with a simple treatment. It also helps in diagnosing some cervical and vaginal infections.
