Frequently Asked Questions

What is infertility?
Infertility is the condition in which a couple cannot conceive within a year despite regular unprotected sexual intercourse. Infertility is a problem encountered in approximately 10-15% of couples.
What are the stages of IVF treatment?
IVF treatment is a process consisting of egg development, egg collection, embryo development and embryo transfer stages.
How long does IVF treatment take?
The treatment starts on the second day of the woman's period. During the egg development, the patient is usually given blood tests and ultrasound examinations every other day and sometimes daily. This process takes an average of 9-12 days. At the end of this period, when the eggs reach a certain maturity, a cracking needle is given and the egg collection process is carried out approximately 36 hours later. On the day the eggs are collected, sperm is taken from the prospective father and the fertilization process is carried out. The developing embryos are evaluated according to their quality and number and transferred after 2-6 days.
When should a decision be made about in vitro fertilization treatment?
If the expectant mother is under 35 years of age and has not become pregnant despite having regular unprotected sexual intercourse for 1 year, or for 6 months if the expectant mother is over 35 years of age, it is necessary to consult a doctor.
Is in vitro fertilization the first treatment to be applied?
Infertility that is usually unexplained or due to physical conditions such as vaginismus, insemination treatment can be tried before IVF. If the woman has a decrease in egg cells and has waited too long for pregnancy, or if there is a problem with the woman's tubes, insemination treatment is not recommended. In insemination treatment, the mother's ovary is stimulated to crack the egg. The father's sperm is washed, the best ones are selected and transferred to the uterus.
Can natural pregnancy occur after IVF treatment?
Couples who conceived through IVF treatment and have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility, PCOS, mild male factor and low ovarian reserve can have babies naturally in the future. Natural pregnancy is not expected in couples who have been treated for tubal factor and severe male infertility.
Will egg reserves run out?
No, egg reserves do not run out.
How should our sexual life be during IVF treatment?
There is no restriction on sexual intercourse during the first days of the injection application during the stimulation period of the ovaries. However, sexual intercourse should not be performed after a certain growth in the eggs has been achieved. Sexual intercourse is not recommended until the embryo transfer and the pregnancy test result.
What preparations should be made when coming from out of town or abroad for IVF treatment?
You can have your preliminary tests done in your own city and share the results with our IVF doctor. In this way, it is determined whether you have any obstacles for the IVF program or pregnancy before the treatment. IVF treatments start on the 2nd day of the woman's menstrual bleeding and continue for approximately 15-18 days. You will be checked at your center 6-7 times in total during this period. Our patients who have irregular menstrual periods can use menstrual regulating medications according to their doctors' preference. Please bring the necessary official documents and all your medical records with you due to legal procedures.
Which infections cause blockage in the tubes?
The fallopian tubes are structures that connect the uterus to the ovaries. Infections in the tubes can cause blockage and cause female infertility. The most common agents that affect the tubes and cause infection are streptococcus, staphylococcus and mycoplasma bacteria and sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and gonococcus. Tuberculosis infection can also rarely affect the tubes and cause blockage. Infections can settle in the tubes through conditions such as intrauterine device application, sexual intercourse, miscarriage, curettage and postpartum, sexual transmission and appendicitis. Blockages in the tubes can prevent normal pregnancy.
Do cancer treatments and chemotherapy impair sperm production?
Chemotherapy is a treatment method that works on the principle of destroying rapidly dividing cells. The target cell is cancer cells, but it also destroys rapidly dividing hair-root, gastrointestinal and reproductive cells in the body, such as sperm and egg cells. Similarly, radiation therapies damage sperm and the germ cells that form sperm cells. Depending on the type, number and total dose of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, it can cause irreversible azoospermia in men, meaning the inability to produce any sperm, and therefore infertility. Freezing and storing sperm prior to cancer treatments is the only proven treatment method used to preserve fertility.
Do pregnancy rates decrease after frozen embryo transfers?
No, the pregnancy rate does not decrease. Frozen embryo transfers performed in a center with an advanced embryology laboratory and where freezing and thawing procedures are well implemented will result in a higher pregnancy rate compared to fresh transfers. Hormonal medications used during treatment may negatively affect the uterus in some patients. Thanks to the frozen transfer process, the uterus is rested and freed from the effects of the medications. For this reason, frozen embryo transfer can be applied as a success-enhancing treatment strategy in patients with repeated unsuccessful IVF attempts.
Is there an increased risk of disease in pregnancies resulting from frozen embryo transfer?
As a result of scientific studies, no increased risk of congenital anomalies or genetic diseases has been found in fetuses obtained with frozen embryo transfer compared to fresh embryo pregnancies. Today, embryo freezing is a standard part of in vitro fertilization treatments and is used as a method that increases the chance of pregnancy.
What is the definition of success in IVF treatments?
IVF centers determine their success by pregnancy rate and live birth rate. The success rates of the centers increase with the correct application of all stages of IVF treatments. A couple will receive a high pregnancy rate with a well-implemented ovulation induction, eggs collected at the right time, well-selected sperm and the correct microinjection, and finally a good technique to transfer the embryo. When choosing an IVF center, attention should be paid to the center's experience, technical equipment in the laboratory and healthy pregnancy rates.
Are genetic diseases the cause of infertility?
There are normally 46 chromosomes in humans. Two of these are the sex chromosomes, the X and Y chromosomes. Women carry two X chromosomes (46XX), while men carry one X and one Y chromosome (46XY). Disorders in sex chromosomes are a cause of infertility. In men, the loss of genetic material in some regions of the Y chromosome causes azoospermia or severe sperm count deficiency and shape-movement disorders, causing infertility. Similarly, in women, the loss of the X chromosome causes the ovaries to not function and therefore infertility. Genetic defects in autosomal chromosomes other than the sex chromosomes also lead to recurrent miscarriages in couples, infertility and genetic disorders in the fetus.
Do the sperm and eggs used belong to the spouses?

How many days are IVF needles used?
The duration of needle use may vary depending on the treatment protocol and the growth rate of the patient's egg. In the short treatment protocol, the average needle use is 9-12 days. This period may vary in long protocols. Since each woman's egg reserve is different, medication is used in the doses and periods determined by your doctor after the examination.
Where and how should IVF needles be stored?
