The Emma test is an extremely important test for patients who have had recurrent miscarriages, especially in IVF treatment. The Emma test, which has started to be used in the world’s leading IVF centers, has started to be applied in Bahçeci centers in Turkey simultaneously with the world . In cases where there is a problem with the embryo being attached to the uterus, especially when a healthy embryo is obtained, the success of IVF treatment increases significantly if the EMMA test is applied.

How Does the EMMA Test Affect IVF Success?

In order for IVF treatment to result in pregnancy and for the pregnancy to continue, a healthy uterine environment is as important as a quality embryo. Until today, it was thought that the inside of the uterus was completely sterile. However, as a result of clinical studies, it has been revealed that there are different types of microbes in the uterus. Some of these microbes are harmful and some are beneficial for the formation of pregnancy. Beneficial microbes are called lactobacilli. Lactobacilli ensure that the embryo adheres to the uterine environment and grows healthily. The density of lactobacilli in the uterus is determined with the Emma test. Thus, the most appropriate time for embryo transfer, which is one of the most important stages of IVF treatment, can be determined. If the microbial diversity in the inner tissue of the uterus is not suitable for pregnancy before embryo transfer, an additional treatment plan is made to improve the uterus.

How is the EMMA Test Performed?

The Emma test is performed with a biopsy taken from the uterus between the 15th and 25th days of the menstrual cycle. The sample taken from the uterus is examined, a detailed map of the environment in the uterus is analyzed and compared with the microbial distribution rate that should be in a healthy uterus. If this comparison results in a risky distribution for the uterus, additional treatment is initiated. If there is no risk environment, embryo transfer is performed. Apart from this, there are some criteria for the test to give healthy results. One of these is antibiotic use. Since antibiotic use affects the test results, the patient should not have used antibiotics for at least 3 months before the EMMA test . If antibiotics were used during this time period, information such as the dose of the antibiotic, the name of the active ingredient and the duration of use should be shared with the doctor.

What Information Does the EMMA Test Provide?

The Emma test provides extensive information about the microbial health of the uterus, including:

  • Gives information about the percentage of lactobacilli.
  • Shows the percentages of the 10 most common bacteria in the endometrial sample.
  • It provides information about whether the microbiota in the uterus is normal or not.
  • It gives an idea about what kind of antibiotic treatment should be applied. The probiotic/antibiotic treatment to be applied should be planned specifically for the patient.
