ERA Test

What is the ERA Test?

The ERA test, ie the “Endometrial Receptivity Assay” test, is a method used in cases of embryo implantation problems, when pregnancy cannot be achieved despite several transfers of healthy embryos. Before resorting to this method, factors related to embryos, to the uterus and to the Fallopian tubes should be carefully examined and treated. A healthy pregnancy not only requires good-quality embryos, but also endometrial receptivity.

Hysteroscopy was used as the first-choice solution for problems related to the uterus. With hysteroscopy, the inner part of the uterus was visualized and any problems that prevented the continuation of pregnancy were corrected. Unfortunately, it was not possible to determine how healthy the cellular microenvironment was, or whether the embryo was ready to implant. With the ERA test, a new era has begun in the treatment of recurrent IVF failures. With the Era test, it is now possible to predict whether the uterus is receptive to the embryo before the transfer, or if the embryo transfer was performed on the appropriate day. This way, the success rate of the pregnancy can be increased.

Test results indicate that the success rates of pregnancy can be increased by changing the treatment schedule and embryo transfer day in some patients. Thus, it is also possible to collect information about the cause of unsuccessful attempts in the past.

How is the ERA test carried out?

A tissue sample is taken from the patient to undergo the ERA test, and this sample is genetically analysed. A small part of the uterine tissue is collected on a specific day during the natural menstrual cycle of the patient. The tissue sampling is done in an operating room and under mild sedation for the comfort of the patient.

The tissue sample is analysed using advanced molecular and genetic diagnostic methods. During this analysis, the activity of over 200 genes that play an important role in the implantation of the embryo is measured. In about 2 weeks, the results are evaluated, and the endometrial receptivity is determined. The transfer date of the embryo is adjusted according to this data.

There may be many causes to recurrent IVF failures. Besides identifying the causes related to the couple, it is essential to choose the right centre. An experienced team and advanced laboratories are the most important criteria to achieve successful results. In some couples, poor embryo quality or genetic defects in embryos also play an important role in recurrent IVF failures.
