For those men who wants to be father, wonders the answer for this question; what should be my sperm count to be able to have children? On this article, we will be answering all the questions such as; what normal sperm count is, what is healthy sperm motility percentage.
Generally, sperm production starts with puberty for men and it continues till further ages. Sperm count shows difference for each person. This is related with the men’s genetic heritance, development in womb and environmental and physiologic differences they face and life standards.
World Health Organization, releases guidance on andrological research and according to this guidance lowest limit for sperm count is 15 million on every millimetre, in a semen sample there should be about 40 million sperm. Any number below that, has longer period for having children.
What Should be the Sperm Motility Level?
For those who wants to have children, having high sperm count is not enough alone. Along with sperm count, motility and morphology is very important. For example, person with sperm count of 100 million sperm in a semen sample with 30% motility has the same chance of having children with a person who has 50 million sperm with 60% motility. When examining the semen analyses, high speed sperms and sperms without motility should be considered.
It is important to consider the shape structure of the sperms with motility. Generally, our patients are surprised to hear but we consider results as normal if we observe 4% of the sperm with good shape. This mean, nearly 95% of the sperms does not have the right shape. Nowadays, DNA that sperm is carrying added into those parameters.
- Normal Sperm Values
- Volume 2.0 ml and above,
- pH 7.2 and above,
- Sperm count in every ml (concentration) 15 million/ml and above,
- Total sperm count 30 million/ml and above,
- Motility%50 and above A+B class motility or A class %25 and above grade,
- +4 or A: Fast motility,
- +3 or B: Slow, high speed,
- +2 or C: Enough speed,
- +1 or D: immobile,
- Shape (morpholoy) %4 and above (Depending on Kruger),
- Viability %75 and above,
- Leucocyte (inflammation cell) below 1 million/ml.
It is worth noting that evaluating these parameters alone is not correct. Generally, the number of millilitres, mobility, morphology criteria are evaluated together to obtain information about the status of infertility. In azoospermia men, it should be examined whether there is sperm in the precipitate formed after centrifugation.
Is It Possible to Sperm Count?
Reason for low sperm count; If there is no anatomical or genetic disorder or if the person has not had a febrile disease, it may increase sperm count by improving quality of life. It is recommended to avoid smoking and alcohol, to take care of regular and healthy nutrition and to exercise regularly for a quality life.
Today, there are products on the market that are offered as antioxidants or nutritional supplements, which are said to be sperm count or quality enhancing properties. For these products to be useful, the above mentioned anatomical and genetic problems should be examined in detail and such treatments should be regulated under the supervision of a health care professional. Otherwise, it should be remembered that these substances taken in high amounts may cause more harm than good.
Does Lifestyle and Clothes Affect Sperm Count?
Lifestyle and clothes may affect sperm count. As mentioned above, feeding habits are especially effective on sperm production. Poor nutrition, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking are factors that adversely affect sperm production both in terms of quality and number and mobility. Especially if this negativity prevents you to have children, you should avoid them.
Testes are the only organs outside the body. This is because the temperature of the testes is a few degrees lower than the body temperature. When several degrees are low, sperms with maximum benefit and high pregnancy potential are produced. If an outfit that prevents this is too tight and increases heat, blood-disrupting clothes, this will adversely affect sperm production. Especially those working in the agricultural sector in our country, working in very hot places such as hot furnaces, quarries, those working with insecticides in the agricultural sector have negative effects on sperm production negatively.
